After writing that previous post and lamenting on what to do about it all day, i consulted with my online mama community about what they do. There are some great ideas for creating a meaningful holiday season on http://www.urbanmamas.com/, without the commercial madness.
And for those who want to take a little more active role in helping out, http://www.activistas.us/ is a Portland-based resource for effecting change in your community. I've expressed interest to them that i would like to take part in their Adopt-a-Family program this holiday season.
Another good resource for making this holiday season about helping, not buying, is to donate to Mercy Corps: http://www.mercycorps.org/
By the way, today just happens to be Adbusters' Buy Nothing Day. I brought my lunch today, instead of indulging in my usual Teriyaki treats. So i guess i am participating!
